A number of senators on Sunday, during a plenary session of the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament), urged govement to provide details on efforts being made to collect weapons belonging to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizb-e-Islami group.

However, the senators lent their support to the possible joining of Hizb-e-Islami to the peace process, but said that govement should have mentioned the disarmament of Hizb-e-Islami in the draft peace agreement.

The senators said that Hizb-e-Islami's move to join the peace process could pave the way for other militant groups to join the peace process.

"I hope that he (Hekmatyar) will come and other opponents of govement will follow him and will reach an agreement with the Afghan govement," said Mohammad Ajan Mangal, a senator.

"Those who accept Afghanistan's constitution and lay down their arms, then we also welcome them," said Zalmai Zabuli, another senator.

The senators expressed their deep conces that if Hizb-e-Islami does not hand over its weapons to govement, it would have bad consequences.

"It has not been stated in the (draft) agreement as to what will happen to the weapons and military equipment that Hekmatyar or Hizb-e-Islami owns," said Nesar Ahmad Haris, a senator.

"Those who join the peace process should hand over their weapons and military equipment to govement, if they want true peace," said Rahmatullah Achakzai, another senator.

The remarks follow in the wake of the recent signing of a draft peace agreement between leaders of the National Unity Govement (NUG) and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
