Thousands of protestors, including hundreds of women, are making their way through the streets of the Afghan capital in protest over the planned rerouting of a new power project.
Despite govement’s attempts to stop the march, by blocking all roads leading into the city with shipping containers, protestors still gathered early Monday and are trying to make their way towards Pashtunistan Square.
Protestors are demanding that the route for the power line linking Turkmenistan with Kabul be routed through Bamiyan province as originally planned opposed to a new route through Salang.
By Sunday however, tempers were running high over the planned rerouting of the power line and organizers of the march said up to 200,000 people were expected to take to the streets Monday moing.
But in a well-planned operation oveight, the Afghan govement systematically blocked off all roads leading in to the city center in a bid to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the presidential palace.
According to the organizers of the march, the Enlightening Movement, their Great Monday March as it is called is so far proving well organized and peaceful.
