Mama Karim spent his life keeping the gardens of Darul Aman palace green.

Karim who is now an old man said he started working for King Amanullah Khan, along with his family, at the age of 13.

Karim remembers all past historical events of that time clearly.

Karim said that King Amanullah Khan paid a lot of attention to the beauty and greenery around the palace and he planted many fruit trees and flowers around the palace.

But Karim has criticized Kabul municipality for not keeping its promises regarding the planting of seedlings and upkeep around the palace.

"When the municipality announced that they are going to hire the palace's old gardeners I came and I told the municipality director I don't need anything, the only thing you need to provide me with is water and the director told me he will dig two wells but they lied they only dug one well," said Karim.

Karim said he also took care of the King's children and when the king and his family were leaving Afghanistan the king asked him to go along with them but he could not leave his family.

When the king and his family fled he fell into a depression and went to the mountain near the palace, he said.

Darul Aman Palace was built in the early 1920s as part of the endeavours of King Amanullah Khan to modeize Afghanistan. The king used the palace for two years and then his kingdom collapsed.

Part of the palace was destroyed during Dr. Najibullah's presidency and then further damaged during the civil war.
