Police, chasing a truck carrying illegal Afghan migrants into Iran, ended in tragedy after Iranian police opened fire on the vehicle - killing six and injuring 18.

ISNA news agency reported that when the truck came to a stop, police found the dead and injured inside.

The incident happened on Saturday afteoon in the easte Iranian county of Rafsanjan.

The news agency reported that many of the refugees were aged between 20 and 30.

Local police chief Alireza Parivar told reporters that the truck had been spotted moving in the desert by patrol forces and was chased after refusing to stop.

He said the shooting started when the driver, who had already traveled for about five kilometers on flat tires, decided to ram through a police blockade in the road.

Iran is dealing with a huge influx of Afghan refugees, with the total number estimated to be in the region of over three million.

Officials say Iran hosts over 1.5 million registered Afghan refugees, but that the same number of illegal Afghan refugees also live in the country.
