Ghani-25-April-2016

President Ashraf Ghani on Monday moing addressed a joint session of both houses of parliament were he said the doors to peace where now only open to some factions of the Taliban but at the same time stressed there is no difference between 'good terrorists and bad terrorists'.

He said the Afghan govement has ended its efforts in calling for peace and will now use all its resources to defend the country.

In a major shift, he said the Afghan govement will no longer call on Pakistan to bring the Taliban to the peace talks tables – despite having relied on them in the past to do so.

He also said the enemies of Afghanistan are "alien hireling groups like Daesh, al-Qaeda, murderous groups of Haqqani and some Taliban who enjoy shedding their countrymen's blood and continue the war and terrorism".

Ghani went on to say that the period "of amnesty" was over and that terrorists would be executed. He said the "time for unjustified amnesty" had ended.

This comes in the wake of last week's deadly bombing in Kabul which claimed the lives of at least 64 people and wounded over 340. It also comes amid a spike in violence around the country, following the Taliban's launch of their spring offensive earlier this month.

Present at Monday's sessions were MPs, Senators, high-ranking officials including ministers, High Peace Council members and Ulema Council members. Absent from the event however was the Afghan CEO Abdullah Abdullah.
