The signing ceremony for the Paris Agreement on climate change was held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York on Friday where leaders of over 170 countries, including China, signed the landmark agreement, giving a strong push to the inteational efforts against global warming.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hosted the signing ceremony.

Friday, which was also Earth Day, was the first day the landmark pact was opened for govement signatures, and it was the largest one-day signing of any inteational agreement, according to the UN.

Climate negotiators from 196 parties adopted the accord at climate change talks in Paris, France, on Dec. 12, 2015.

The pact, which UN diplomats have been working toward for nine years, is widely seen as a breakthrough in negotiations that have been bogged down with disputes over how to divide responsibilities between richer and poorer countries for years.

The signing ceremony marks the first step for the pact to come into force committing countries to the promises made in Paris to lower planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

In this session, Zhang Gaoli, Vice Premier, People's Republic of China, said: "We will take effective actions at home to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. China has set a target of achieving the peaking of carbon dioxide emissions around 2030 and making its best efforts to peak early. Relevant actions have been incorporated into our national development plans."

The move by China was welcomed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
