Nato Troops Afghanistan

NATO's military chief Gen. Philip Breedlove said on Wednesday in a television interview that Afghanistan is facing a tough challenge but that it continues to react well.

However, speaking to CNN he said that the planned drawdown of U.S troops, from 9,800 to 5,500 by the end of the year would have a negative impact on NATO's current train, assist and advise mission.

He said that as the training mission currently stands, NATO would not be able to continue as it is at the moment – in light of a sizeable cut in the number of troops.

"The mission would have to change in some way. But we are looking at options now to retain that connectivity to the cause, providing enablers and possibly other nations providing more troops etc. etc. All of this is still very preliminary but what we are looking at are those options to continue the mission which is to train, advise, assist," he said.

On the need to train Afghan troops, Breedlove said there is still the need for NATO to remain for a certain amount of time.

He said Afghanistan is facing a tough challenge but that he believes "they will continue to react well, not perfectly, but well . We still see the challenges that we knew they were going to have."
