Taj Mohammad Jahid, the minister of interior on Thursday suspended the PD1 police chief and four other police officials following Tuesday's deadly attack in Kabul, officials said.
Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for MoI told TOLOnews that those suspended were all key officials for PD1. They were the police chief, the head of intelligence, the head of the unit fighting terrorism and another police official.
The MoI had earlier waed officials that they will suspend those in charge pending an investigation into such attacks.
The MoI said in a statement Thursday that they are investigating the incident and will disclose details to the public as soon as possible.
On Tuesday, insurgents detonated an explosive-laden truck near an intelligence facility in Pul-e-Mohamood Khan area in Kabul city. Sixty four people were killed and 347 others were injured.
After blowing open the perimeter wall, insurgents stormed the facility firing on security forces inside the compound – a unit tasked with protecting VIPs.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area but a gun battle lasted for over two hours until the situation was brought under control.
However, hundreds of people within a one kilometer radius were injured and dozens killed. Widespread damage was also caused to buildings and houses in the area.
After the attack, the MoI Minister held a special meeting on Tuesday night in a bid to step up security in Kabul following the bombing.
In a statement issued by the MoI, the ministry said Jahid discussed security issues with officials from the inteal intelligence department and other units. He also gave orders for them to use all resources available to protect Kabul from a repeat attack, to hunt down "terrorists in the city" and to increase cooperation with other security organizations.
"At the meeting with police officials, the MoI minister said the Taliban aims to carry out terrorist attacks in Kabul and other cities to hurt civilians," the statement read.
Jahid also told police officials to rectify weak spots within the system as soon as possible.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
