Agricultural Fair Wraps Up In Panjwayee

A successful two-day agricultural fair was held in Panjwayee district of southe Kandahar recently, which drew farmers from around the province who not only displayed their produce but also helped create awareness about the intricacies of farming.

Local officials said the agricultural fair aimed to enhance awareness among local farmers about how they could improve farming processes and hopefully find new markets for their produce.

Farmers meanwhile, welcomed the opportunity to display their goods and hoped it would help open up new markets for them.

The agricultural fair was held on the 23 and 24 March, in the wake of Nawroz (the Persian new year).

Local farmers were afforded the opportunity to display their produce at stalls – which was also warmly welcomed by the dozens of visitors from across the province that attended the event over the two days.

However, some farmers called on govement to help them – especially those who claim they eradicated poppy fields in order to plant legal crops.

One farmer, Shah Mohammad Ahmadi, said: "People voluntarily eradicated poppy fields with their tractors, 20 to 25 applications were submitted to the minister, but I swear that until now no one has provided us with even a bunch of wheat, fertilizers or seeds."

But another farmer, Shah Mohammad Shukran, said: "...the programs that are going on in Kandahar for three years have been formulated in cooperation with security and local officials and it has been part of the honest services of these honorable people."

Meanwhile, local officials in Kandahar said that holding such events helped promote the industry in the province and also helped find new markets for the farmers.

"The war against corruption will not yield any outcomes unless there is cooperation from the people, and the elders. My request from the people is not to be party to embezzlements while implementing the projects, but you must instead help prevent such issues," deputy goveor of Kandahar, Abdul Ali Shamsi said.
