Afghanistan Set To Take On West Indies

Afghanistan is set to take on West Indies in their ICC World Cup T20 match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur in India on Sunday. The match will kick off at 2pm local time.

The team looks on form and is hoping for a win against West Indies. As the only Associate team to have made it this far in the touament, the team is hoping for at least one win, which would mean they need to beat West Indies Sunday in order to secure this.

The team has however become the darling of cricket as they have time and again shown their mettle in their quest to beat at least one Full Member team.

But, statistics show that a couple of team members have certainly made their mark.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai is currently in number 1 position as having batted the most fifties in this touament. He secured two fifties while team mate Mohammad Shahzad is in third place after also having secured one fifty.

Shahzad is also ranked number two for having the second highest run score in this touament, and Stanikzai is at number 7.

Mohammad Nabi is meanwhile the top wicket taker so far in the touament with team mate Rashid Khan ranked number four.

However, Sunday will be the first time Afghanistan plays West Indies – which is also their last high-profile match for a while.

It is also the last chance to leave an indelible mark on the biggest stage.

"When we first appeared in that World Cup in West Indies (in 2010), we were only thinking that we are playing with big names and most of us were very impressed with the players around," said Stanikzai.

"This time, we are not only participating in this touament but we were serious about it. If you see our last three matches, especially against Sri Lanka and England, we have played very good cricket. To be honest, we could have won that because we knew the strength of our team but somehow we did errors and mistakes that's why we couldn't finish on a winning note. If you compare 2010 with 2016, there is much difference in the Afghanistan team and in next one or two years, we will be a serious team and beat these full members very easily as we have potential in this team."
