Ghani Marks Farmers Day At Kabul Event

President Ashraf Ghani said on Sunday that govement will distribute 40,000 tons of fertilized seed to farmers in the coming year.

Speaking at an event on the eve of Farmer's Day, Ghani told those present that farmers need to be appreciated for their hard work and called on everyone to stand united.

He said that in the coming year, 50 farmers in Afghanistan will be awarded for their contribution to the sector.

But he broached the subject of water and said distribution of this valuable commodity was not a fair process. He said: "We need a proper water distribution system."

He said the country desperately needs up to 29 new dams in order to distribute and utilize water fairly. He said people also need to value water and not waste it.

On the issue of fruit, he said he plans to order the ministry of finance to increase the tariff on imported fruit.

But he went on to say that govement is also committed to paving the way to export 600 tons of fruit daily to the Gulf States.
