German Ambassador to Kabul Markus Potzel on Tuesday said he expects direct talks will take place between the Afghan govement and the Taliban in the near future but added that the Taliban made a tactical move by rejecting the direct talks with Kabul.

He emphasized the need for support to be given to the Afghan security forces, saying that his country will continue training and helping the Afghan National Security and Defense Force (ANDSF).

"The rejection of the peace talks by the Taliban is a tactical move which will be for a short time. I hope the direct peace talks between Afghan govement and Taliban will take place in the long term," Potzel told TOLOnews.

He said: "Afghan army and police have made big achievements over the past decade and we will continue supporting them."

There are 908 German troops in Afghanistan which are busy in training and advising the Afghan security forces. Germany annually spends at least $430,000 USD on different sectors in Afghanistan.
