Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, deputy head of the counter narcotics department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI), said on Sunday that drug enforcement officials have arrested more than 1,700 suspected drug dealers in the past seven years.
He said that since March this year, almost 200 key smugglers have been arrested.
He also said that nine police officers and five Afghan National Army (ANA) officials were arrested.
According to Ahmadi, these operations have netted more than 185,000 tons of narcotics, chemicals and alcohol.
In addition to this, around 22 drug factories have been destroyed across the country.
"At Kabul Inteational Airport (Hamid Karzai Inteational Airport), in 63 cases around 84 smugglers were arrested, most of them were arrested in the past month," Ahmadi said.
Stamping out the drug problem in the country has always been a key promise by govement. However, dozens of critics have blasted govement for not doing enough to fight the problem.
"I don't think there is enough motivation to fight against narcotics, because there are people who receive big money through this," said Naiem Baluch, an MP.
Afghanistan has been placed at the top of the list of drug producing and smuggling countries in the world.
