At least one policeman was killed and three others were injured in a Taliban attack on the North Gate Hotel in Kabul city early Monday moing, Kabul Police Chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.
Rahimi said that there were no civilian casualties and no casualties among foreigners.
He said the attack ended after two attackers were gunned down by police.
The incident happened after a truck bomb was detonated close to the North Gate Hotel to open the way for two attackers, hiding nearby, to enter the compound. But security officials opened fire on them before they could get in, said Rahimi.
"When the suicide truck bomber detonated his explosive the two other attackers were faced with a police response and hid in an area close to the hotel," he said.
A reliable source has confirmed that no staff members or guests were injured during the attack.
However, staff and guests spent hours hunkered down in safe rooms.
At the time of the attack there were 11 foreigners, nine staff members and 26 guards on site.
According to the source, the Taliban arrived at the gate and reportedly asked guards for help, saying they had run out of fuel.
Another source from within the compound confirmed the massive blast had been a truck bomb at the gate.
Heavy shooting was heard from about 6.30am in the area for about half an hour but stopped shortly after 7am.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
