President Ashraf Ghani's national security advisor, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, on Sunday moved to assure the public that govement was committed to delivering on promises and ensuring socioeconomic development in the country.

Addressing elders from the easte regions of Afghanistan, Atmar said that no one should doubt the intentions of govement in terms of national development.

Referring to last week's suicide attack at a mass rally in Kabul, Atmar however called for more robust action to be taken against Daesh so as to rid the country of the group.

Insurgents associated to Daesh last week targeted the rally killing more than 80 protestors and wounding over 300. The attack sparked a national outcry and Afghans across the nation joined a chorus of inteational condemnations over the deadly attack.

Elders from the easte regions meanwhile met with Atmar at a critical juncture as there has been a steady growth in Daesh numbers in the easte parts of the country over the past few months.

Elders however also discussed other issues of conce with Atmar, specifically that regarding financial, social and political problems that easte residents face.

They appealed to govement to help.

"I hope that all promises the govement made to the people are fulfilled; we are facing an oppressive war and this has been hindering our way toward development as all resources are diverted to security.

"Although a lot of work has been done, the majority of promises made to the nation are yet to be fulfilled; we should not rely on the current scope of development and growth, but there is no doubt about the intention of the govement to serve the people," said Atmar.

Atmar also talked about the peace process in Afghanistan and said that peace is achievable but only with those who do not believe in the killing of people.

He said that Afghanistan will not remain silent against those who fund terrorist groups and equip them to wage war against Afghanistan and its people.

The govement will continue its crackdown against Daesh outfits in easte regions - until the militant group is completely eliminated, Atmar said.

"... I want to say that the enemy does not differentiate between us and they believe that every individual and every Afghan is an enemy to them," said Atmar.

Addressing the participants, Abdul Qadir Hussaini, the newly elected head of the council for easte regions, asked govement to stop the illegal extraction of mines and to stop insurgents from recruiting fighters from among the local youth.

"With the formation of the council, the people of the easte region maintain the right to defend their privileges and continue their struggle for development of their respective provinces," said Husssaini.

Council members reaffirmed their support to the Afghan security forces in their struggle against terrorism and insurgency.

"Corruption existed in the previous and present govements, including political corruption, which we witnessed during the elections ... we want govement to combat corruption, but we strongly defend our courageous and champion (security) forces," said Mirwais Yasini, MP from Nangarhar.

"The security situations in the easte provinces are quite fragile, kidnapping rates have increased in Nangarhar, and they (insurgents) transfer all resources to Pakistan – a trend we need to curb," said Maftahuddin, a member of the easte council.

In recent months, Daesh has clearly increased its presence in the easte regions. The group has also increased its attacks, on security forces and civilians, in several areas across Nangarhar province in its efforts to expand its influence.
