Officials in the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said Kandahar has exported $68 million USD in fresh and dried fruits this year.
They said that despite transit challenges, there was a 21 percent increase in the export of fresh and dried fruits as compared to the past year. Only Kandahar has exported 59,000 tons of fruit, they added.
"Based on the reports that we have received, Kandahar has exported $68 million USD in fruits. It has exported more than 59,000 tons of fruits," said Khan Jan Alokozai, the deputy head of the ACCI.
Meanwhile a number of economic analysts believe Afghanistan's fruits are of a high standard and the govement, by establishing centers for standard packaging and cold storage facilities, should further increase their export to inteational markets.
"The govement should at first know to export the fruits to the countries where they are needed," said Taj Mohammad Talash, an economic analyst.
He stressed that Afghanistan fruits should be exported to regional and European markets, after a standard process of sorting, packaging and marketing.
Officials from the ACCI said that fruit exports might decrease next year, if the govement does not take steps to resolve the challenges before exporting of fruits.
