Ghani-12-june-2016

President Ashraf Ghani on Monday condemned the attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida which saw 50 people killed and 53 injured – making it the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S's history.

"I unequivocally condemn the horrific attack in Orlando, Florida, USA. Nothing can justify killing of civilians," Ghani said.

"My sympathies and thoughts are with the families of the victims, the American people and the U.S govement."

The U.S police killed the gunman, who was identified as Omar Mateen, 29, a New York-bo Florida resident and U.S citizen who was the son of immigrants from Afghanistan. He had twice been questioned by FBI agents in recent years, authorities said.

Mateen's former wife described him as emotionally and mentally disturbed with a violent temper, yet who aspired to be a police officer. He also worked as an armed guard for the security firm G4S, the world's largest, according to the company.

At one point during the attack, Mateen reportedly called 911 and stated his allegiance to Daesh.

Law enforcement officials were probing this to find out whether the attack was inspired by Daesh, but they said there was no proof that Mateen had worked directly with the group.

As the shooting rampage was unfolding, Mateen "made calls to 911 this moing in which he stated his allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State (Daesh)," said Ronald Hopper, the FBI's assistant special agent in charge on the case.

At the time of the shooting, an estimated 350 people were inside the nightclub.

The U.S President Barack Obama has described Sunday's gun attack as "an act of terror and an act of hate".

Americans were united in "grief, outrage and resolve to defend our people", he said.

Afghan CEO Abdullah Abdullah also expressed his condolences on Monday during a Council of Minister's meeting in Kabul.

He offered his sympathy to the "people and govement of U.S for the tragic incident in Orlando, Florida".

"This attack in Orlando is telling us that terrorism knows no religion, race, boundary and geography. Terrorism must be eliminated," he said.
