Hundreds of worried relatives gathered outside Kabul hospitals on Tuesday desperate for news of loved ones following the deadly suicide bombing earlier in the day.

Tuesday's attack on the intelligence unit tasked with the protection of VIPs was one of the deadliest incidents in the past eight months.

According to officials, most of the victims are civilians. They confirmed that 28 people were killed and over 320 injured when a suicide bomber detonated explosives that had been packed in a truck.

Hundreds of people were ferried to hospitals by overstretched ambulance staff on Tuesday but in a show of support dozens of Kabul residents converged on hospitals to donate blood.

Relatives of those injured were not however allowed to enter hospitals in the capital to check on their loved ones – many of whom were injured by flying glass.

In addition widespread damage was caused to businesses, houses and shops and according to some reports, people within a one kilometer radius were injured.

One such victim, a woman living with her three children, not only sustained serious damage to her house but she also incurred massive business losses after the mantu (traditional Afghan food) that she sells was destroyed in the blast.

The last blast of this magnitude was reportedly Shah Shaheed, which happened eight months ago. But many people believe this to have been a more powerful explosion, considering the widespread damage to buildings.
