At least six security force members and 44 Taliban insurgents were killed in heavy clashes in central Uruzgan province in the past two days, local officials said on Wednesday.

The clash started two days ago after dozens of insurgents attacked a number of security check posts in Trin Kot, the capital of the province, Dost Mohammad Nayab, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said.

"The Taliban have suffered heavy casualties in the clashes and the military operation is still ongoing to clear the area of insurgents," he said.

However, he did not provide further details about the clashes.

In the meantime, officials from the provincial council said that the Taliban are only four kilometers from the center of Trin Kot but that clashes had eased off on Wednesday.

The officials also said that security forces retreated from 15 security check posts due to the lack of military equipment.

A security source also told TOLOnews' reporter Abdullah Hamim that Uruzgan and Kandahar highway is closed to traffic.

Hamim reported that the security forces have been requesting reinforcements and military equipment in order to eliminate the insurgents.

Dozens of families have been displaced from their homes and have moved to center of Trin Kot, according to reports.
