The target of Thursday's blast in Kabul appears to have been General Samim Samim, the former secretary for late Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim.The blast occurred after a magnetic IED, attached to Samim's armored vehicle, detonated in Traffic Square in PD4 in Kabul. Samim, who was in the vehicle at the time, escaped unharmed. Samim, who works for the Ministry of Defense, had been traveling with his family at the time of the blast. "One passenger in the vehicle was a child and he sustained minor injuries," said Kabul Police CID chief Fridon Obaidi. "The blast took place then smoke and flames penetrated the vehicle. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Saturday said that the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) are continuing their military campaign against Taliban insurgents in several districts across the country. The statement comes at a time that conces are on the rise over the possible collapse of several key districts in the northe and easte regions of the country to the Taliban. Reports however from the battle fields indicate that the Taliban has intensified its activities in several provinces across the country and fierce fighting is currently under way between the Taliban militants and Afghan security forces in Raghistan district of Badakhshan, Jalrez district of Maidan Wardak, Hesarak district of Nangarhar and Kamesh district of the easte province of Nuristan bordering neighboring Pakistan. Early on Saturday, the Taliban launched a coordinated attack on Raghistan district of northe Badakhshan province. A member of Badakhshan provincial council waed that Raghistan district is on the verge of collapse to the Taliban as insurgents continue to put the security forces under pressure. "Taliban launched attacks on Jalrez district on Thursday night, they attacked local police outposts and tried to take control of the district," MP Sediqa Mubariz said. There are conces that if the security forces do not act swiftly against the Taliban militants in war hit areas, negative consequences will be felt. "War is going on in Jalrez district, fighting is also underway in Kot and Hesarak of Nangarhar and Shireen Tagab of Faryab, we have launched planned offensives on these activities," deputy spokesman for the ministry of defense Mohammad Radmanish said. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday introduced National Directorate Of Security (NDS) care-taker chief and Ministry of Defense (MoD) care-taker and called on them to increase efforts to ensure the safety of the people.Abdullah also said the inteational community's support was necessary to strengthen security forces and said Afghanistan still needs the aid.‎The CEO said that at the moment security forces engaged in military operations are well coordinated."Because of Afghanistan people's strength and capacity and the brave Afghan sons, our country is being defended," said Abdullah.He went on to say the enemies had hoped to collapse the govement but they failed.During the ceremony the new NDS care-taker Masoum Stanikzai spoke about the current challenges ahead of Afghan security forces."There are lots of challenges ahead of us, there are big challenges and there is the need for full unity of Afghan armed forces and today all the forces are working closely with each other," said Stanikzai."Those who martyred our defenseless people and changed our country to ruins and those who want to fight with us and martyr our soldiers and officers they are our enemies," said Abdullah Habibi the MoD care-taker.More than one and a half years have passed since the establishment of the national unity govement but the Ministry of Defense and NDS still being run by care-takers.Stanekzai was nominated last year for the position of defense minister but the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) failed to give him a vote of confidence. Defense Minister Masoom Stanikzai has issued an order authorizing Afghan security forces to increase the number of night raids against homes of suspected Taliban insurgents and other militants. Stanikzai also asked Afghan forces to take firm action against border violations and to defend the nation against threats without hesitation. The minister's remarks come just days after reports surfaced that Afghanistan's easte border regions have once again come under rocket attack from outside the country. The move also comes as Taliban forces continue to pose major challenges to embattled Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in various regions of the country, in their bid to gain territory and strategic towns. Following the end of the U.S combat mission in Afghanistan, the security situation has sharply deteriorated on the back of intensified attacks by the Taliban against Afghan forces. The sharp increase has shown no signs of abating. "Presently the question is why are these wars fought in Zabul and Shindand and Badghis where only Afghan civilians are killed. What are the intentions behind these wars? If these wars are aimed at seizing power or fighting for the slavery of others, then it must be kept in mind that the people of Afghanistan are fully aware of these conspiracies," said Stanikzai. Govement's new shift also reflects growing conce among the residents in easte regions of the country following cross-border firing. "Sometimes we hear that a certain area was targeted and that a violation was committed in an area, our duty is to defend the country and our borders in line with our available resources and capabilities.
